James Barnard City College Plymouth

Sherford Skills Training Centre

After spending ten years as a support worker, James thought it was time for a change and turned to the construction industry to build his career from the ground up.

“I spent a lot of time on-site with my grandad about ten, 15 years ago. It gave me a real taste of the industry and I had a good foundational knowledge, but ultimately decided I wanted to do something different with my career.”

Following the passing of his grandad, James found himself being drawn back to the world of construction. He dived head-first into a course with the Sherford Skills Training Centre and hasn’t looked back since.

James has immersed himself in various supervisor courses, set on expanding his expertise and skills. Throughout his training, James learned the intricacies of dealing with customers, handling health and safety, and meeting the high standards of the construction industry.

He’s also come to terms with the inherent dangers of a building site, something that James regarded as “easy to ignore if you don’t do a course like this one. It was really worth coming here and getting that on-site experience, all while learning how to become a trainee site manager.”

Even though James decided to embark on a new career path, his commitment to community welfare continued to be a driving force in his new role. His focus on constructing affordable homes for families, particularly those with young children, and advocating for shared ownership schemes to get people on the property ladder highlights his dedication to making a tangible difference in the community.

“Homelessness is massive in Plymouth so I’m really passionate about giving back to the community and creating housing that’s accessible and means we can get people into safe and warm accommodation.”
